STATEMENT FROM NATIONAL SECRETARY DANIEL WALTON, & STATE SECRETARY PETER LAMPS
Wednesday 08th January 2020
Across Australia there are hundreds of AWU members currently fighting bushfires as part of their work duties for State and Territory governments. The AWU thanks these members for their hard work, professionalism, dedication and their massive contribution to saving lives and homes during these unprecedented fires. Your union stands ready to provide you with any assistance you may need.
We also recognise the thousands of volunteers, including large numbers of AWU members, who have given up their Christmas and holidays with families to protect their communities during this time of need.
The scale of these fires has horrified Australia, and unfortunately lives, including those of volunteers, have been lost. It is clear, however, that the destruction and loss would have been far greater if the nation was not able to rely upon the amazing efforts of paid firefighters and volunteers – including many thousands of AWU members. The AWU, on behalf of all members, thanks those of you who have contributed to this mammoth effort.
As your union we will always stand with you, and not just at work. If any AWU members wish to seek assistance from the AWU during the bushfire crisis, please register your details by contacting your local Branch office.
